The Hohe Tauern Bike Trail leads you across 14 stages through the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region, combining physical challenge with the sense of space and calm that defines a holiday in the Alps.
Across around 530 kilometres and approximately 12,000 metres of ascent, you expierence the diversity of the region in a truly active way. Crystal-clear mountain lakes, traditional alpine huts, rushing glacial streams and striking peaks accompany you through impressive National Park valleys, making every stage unique.
What to expect on the trail
From the Großarltal to the Krimml Waterfalls, the route takes you through an alpine landscape stretching from the valley floor along the Salzach river up into high alpine terrain. This combination of variety, openness and authenticity is what makes the trail so appealing.
You mainly ride on forest and alpine roads closed to public traffic, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful and nature-focused biking experience. With mostly moderate gradients, the trail is also well suited to riders who prefer a more relaxed pace.

Yes, one section of the Hohe Tauern Bike Trail runs through the Piesendorf Niedernsill region. Stage 7 leads from Kaprun via Piesendorf to Niedernsill, continuing into the Niedernsill Mühlbach valley as far as the Schaunbergalm, before returning to the village and following the Tauern cycle path on to Uttendorf, the stage destination.
The Niedernsill Mühlbachtal is particularly known for its peaceful, unspoilt natural setting and offers an immersive experience of nature away from the larger visitor hotspots.
Tip 📌
The Schaunbergalm is a lovely place to stop for refreshments (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). From here, experienced hikers can also set out on a hike to the picturesque Hacklsee (approx. 3.5 hours return, around 670 metres of elevation gain).
The Hohe Tauern Bike Trail is primarily designed as a summer activity. In the Piesendorf Niedernsill region, mountain biking on officially designated trails and forest roads is permitted from 1st May to 15th November.
Outside this period, riding is not allowed. Please respect the regulations, as well as nature, landowners and trail usage, so that this experience can be preserved for the long term.
