Winter in the National Park
In winter, the predominant season in the high-altitude regions of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the landscape reveals itself in an entirely different light. The apparent calm and silence can be deceiving.
During a guided snowshoe hike through the National Park landscape, the winter sun, reflecting off the gleaming snow cover, makes the short winter days seem a bit longer.
Monday
WINTER WONDERLAND OF WATERFALLS
21st December 2026 to 29th March 2027 - Krimml
Put on your snowshoes and set off: together with a National Park Ranger, you'll hike through the snow-covered landscape around Krimml to the Krimml Waterfalls. The route leads gently uphill across fields and meadows, with views of Krimml and the Kitzbühel Alps along the way.
At the waterfalls, impressive ice formations may have developed when temperatures are cold enough. After a short break, the tour follows snow-covered paths back to the starting point.

HIGH ALPINE STUBACHTAL
29th December 2026 to 30th March 2027 - Uttendorf
Put on your snowshoes and head into the winter landscape of Stubachtal Valley. Right at the start, the route leads through a tunnel with a striking curtain of ice. Following forest tracks and woodland paths, you'll lok for animal tracks and learn how wildlife spends the winter in Hohe Tauern National Park. As you continue, the forest gradually opens up, revealing views of the high-alpine landscape of Stubachtal Valley.

WINTER EXPERIENCE IN HOLLERSBACHTAL VALLEY
23rd December 2026 to 31st March 2027 - Hollersbach
Frost-covered mountain meadows, icy streams and snow-covered forests accompany you on this snowshoe hike through Hollersbachtal Valley. The route follows old, hidden paths through the winter forest. Along the way, clearings offer views across the Hollersbach and Salzach valleys. Keep an eye out for animal tracks in the snow, which offer clues to the winter lives of local wildlife.

MAGICAL WINTER EXPERIENCE
23rd December 2026 to 31st March 2027 - Rauris
Explore the winter landscape of Hüttwinkltal Valley in Rauris on snowshoes. The route leads across snow-covered meadows and fields, past wintry ponds and through the forest. Along the way, you'll enjoy views across Hüttwinkltal Valley and, in good visibility, towards the Sonnblick and Ritterkopf mountains. With a little luck, you may spot animal tracks in the snow and learn more about the wildlife that lives in the valley.

PRIMEVAL SULZBACH VALLEYS & HOCHFELD SHOW MINE
31st December 2026 to 1st April 2027 - Neukirchen am Großvenediger
Starting at the entrance to Untersulzbachtal Valley, you'll hike to the historic miners' hut, where there is time to enjoy the snack you have brought with you and a cup of warm tea. Then it's time to leave the winter landscape behind and step into the world of mining. Equipped with protective clothing and a helmet, you'll enter the Hieronymus-Erbstollen tunnel at the Hochfeld Show Mine. A National Park Ranger will tell you about the lives of the miners who once worked here and the history of mining in the Sulzbach valleys.

PRIMEVAL FOREST IN WINTER
1st January to 2nd April 2027 - Rauris
This snowshoe hike takes you through the Rauris forest, past old trees and snow-covered ponds. Together with a National Park Ranger, you'll explore the forest in winter. At the edge of the forest, views open up across the alpine meadows and surrounding peaks. The route continues to the Naturfreundehaus Kolm Saigurn, where you can stop for refreshments. Depending on snow conditions, you'll return to the starting point either by toboggan or on foot.

From mid-March, tobogganing back to the car park is no longer possible due to the opening of the toll road. Participants therefore travel in their own cars, sharing vehicles where possible, up to the starting point at Lenzanger. |
WASENMOOS - VIEWS OF THE HOHE TAUERN
1st January to 2nd April 2027 - Mittersill
Starting at the viewing platform, this snowshoe hike takes you into the winter landscape of Wasenmoos. The route leads across snow-covered meadows and fields, with views of the Hohe Tauern opening up along the way. In the nearby raised bog and winter forest, you can also keep an eye out for animal tracks in the snow.

Explore the winter landscape around Piesendorf and Niedernsill on this guided tour and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains. Depending on snow conditions, you'll either head out on snowshoes or follow suitable trails on a winter hike. The tour is adapted to the current conditions on site.
